Getup: June Gloom

I wore this outfit a couple weeks ago for a quick trip to Santa Monica. The marine layer was doing its thing that day, hence the Autumnal vibe.

Tee (Brandy Melville) ♦ Jeans-old (Similar) ♦ Sandals (Birkenstock) ♦ Purse (Madewell) ♦ Sunglasses (Madewell) ♦ Hat (Brixton) ♦ Cardigan (Urban Outfitters)

Let me tell you about these jeans.

I picked these up at an Urban Outfitters in 2011. Reveling in the new world of possibilities now open to me as a result of the high-waisted renaissance, I was utterly devoted to the UO High Rise Seam Jean (no longer available) and owned a pair in every color. This was one of them.

For the past seven years, this pair has managed to make it through dozens of closet cullings. One by one, these jeans watched their brethren be shoved into trash bags labeled “Thrift” and “Sell”, never to be seen again.

One night in the spring of 2015 I laid them out on the living room floor of our first apartment and began slicing into the knees with a razor blade. Alex, my then-fiance, muttered tremulously “why are you putting holes in your jeans?”. I think I  must have replied with some quip about the subtle difference between “putting in holes” and “distressed”. It was a learning moment.

After hundreds of hours on my body over the years, the fabric has been kneaded into the perfect blend of stretch and softness. The color, once so black the dye would rub off on my car seat, is now a deep charcoal grey. They are perfect.
