Unless you want to be labeled a spoiled weakling who appreciates nothing, there isn’t much to be gained from complaining about Southern California weather. During this time of year, however, when we are inundated with images of gloved hands clutching mugs of cider, cozy fireplaces, fallen leaves and first snowfalls, it is hard not to feel like Southern Californians are consistently missing out on something very quintessential about autumn. Since 2013 the average high temperature for Los Angeles on Thanksgiving day has been 91 degrees and even though this happens year after year, I always feel a little caught off guard by the heat.
Lately, I have been thinking about what it would be like to grow up somewhere like Australia where Christmas takes place during summertime. Considering how much our American holiday traditions and iconography are inspired by the elements of winter (snowmen, reindeer, sleighs, etc), I am fascinated by the possibility of a holiday season that embraces the heat. I wonder how long it will take for Southern California holiday traditions to transition from indoor home-cooked meals and snow sledding to beach BBQs and volleyball. I might give it a go next year.
As it was 92 degrees on Thanksgiving day, this outfit was as close as I could get to honoring the season while being weather-appropriate. This is the same Free People skirt I wore in this post (I have it in three colors) and even though it is technically a mini skirt, I think combining it with tights helped to preserve my ever-dwindling modesty. It was Thanksgiving after all.
