I have a tendency to outright reject new style trends when I see them for the first time. When bodysuits first made their resurgence I swore up and down that I would never, ever wear one of those god awful cooch-hammocks. Today I own 4 of them. Overalls are another good example. One summer I’m looking at overalls on Pinterest with a judgey side-eye, and the next I am hoarding them like Tangerine La Croix. Sometimes I stick to my guns when it comes to rejecting the latest trends (I’m looking at you ruffles and cork wedges), but more often I find myself later embracing that which I once deemed an insult to common human decency.
My tendency to be a late-adopter-trend-whore isn’t one of my finer traits, but I recognize my style flaws and try to learn from them. When I saw this jumpsuit at an Anthropologie in Portland, I felt that familiar instinct to reject it as too “out there” (I mean, it does have some undeniable workin’ on the railroad vibes) but the perfect cocktail of being on vacation and feeling adventurous led to those famous last words: “I’ll just try it on”.
And now here we are. Something about this jumpsuit just makes me feel uniquely feminine without being girly. The top part is slimming and flattering to my small upper body while the bottom isn’t too tight so as to accentuate my hips in a bad way. It just feels…good. It’s also a great piece for an active day out running errands when I don’t want to go Full Frump (Birkenstocks, leggings, hoodie, resting bitch face, huge sunglasses) even though Full Frump is arguably my signature look.
This is definitely the most adventurous style choice I have made in ages and maybe time will tell if it was a good one. When I reach for this jumpsuit in my closet, there’s always part of me that wants to go with something else. Something safer. Something more classic. I’m afraid I will look back on these pictures and wish I hadn’t been so bold. Then I remind myself that, in the end, it doesn’t really matter. It is really just clothing.
